This may be the most romantically-fun evening of 2022 Valentine’s weekend where you can be served like kings and queens in Bulawayo.
Chingy’s Culinary Affairs, a start-up founded by Shingi The Chef, is preparing to host its second pop-up dinner event in Bulawayo on the 12th of February this year.
It’s no surprise that pop-up dinners are taking the industry by storm. They allow chefs to get creative and try their new concepts, test new audiences, and experiment with edgier cuisine. Chef Shingi, with extensive industry knowledge, has created a buzz with one of Zimbabwe’s first pop—up dinners he did last year in December.
“What we are doing is establishing dinner pop-up concept, as proof-points right now”, said chef Shingi. “In our [direct-to-consumer] business, we have seen the consumer desire is there for such events.”
“I have always loved the idea of mystery and kitchen pop-ups, given that it allows us showcasing skills in menu planning because every pop-up has to come with its own unique menu.”
“The first event in December was quite stressful and with a lot of planning required but with added assistance from friends and family I managed to turn it into a successful dinner event. I am looking forward to a great turnout on the 12th because I have a tantalizing menu with a great atmosphere to mix and mingle with people over great food and drinks,” he added.
Culinary tourism has become one of the most important tourism niches in recent years. Food tourism is diverse and includes many specialists niches such as food festivals, dining experiences, wine trails and producer visits. The pop-up dinner is to promote culinerary tourism as well as showcase diffrent cuisines in the country.
With Zimbabwe on a drive to revive the country’s coronavirus-hit tourism industry, through the National Tourism Recovery and Growth Strategy, Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) is excited by the pop-up dinner event in boosting domestic tourism.
Speaking to ZTA’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Godfrey Koti said, “With the National Tourism Recovery and Growth Strategy, which seeks to create a USD$5 Billion economy around the tourism product, with such initiatives like Chingy’s Cullinary pop-up-dinner we are definitely on course and we are happy that Bulawayo is benefiting as it is one of Zimbabwe’s prime destinations.”
“The pop-up dinner around the Valentines period is a welcomed development. We are hopeful this will push domestic tourism by all means possible in the right direction complimeting the ZIMBHO campaign we are running as a piece to recover from the covid-19 effects,” added Koti.
